I am a Turkish guy who lives in the States with his family. I might say that I got the same feeling sometimes :) If your appearance or accent is different here in the States people look at you in a different way, but the difference is they do not do that too long and the total percentage is low :) because diversity is common in the States.

Another thing is(I believe it is the main reason) individualism is not a thing in Turkey. It is because of culture. People do not think that they have a right to stare at you like that. In daily life, people may occupy your personel space without hesitation. Again it is because of geography and culture. We had to live 82million people in an equivalent area of Texas:)
